Artist's
Retreat

Windhoek,
Namibia
2024
Set within the arid landscape of Windhoek, Namibia, this retreat serves as a quiet sanctuary for artistic creation and reflection. The design combines a lightweight steel frame with clay-based elements, balancing structural clarity with material warmth. At its core is a north-facing art studio, where large openings frame the desert landscape and introduce controlled natural light. Clerestory apertures support passive cooling and improve thermal comfort in Namibia’s hot, dry climate. The building operates fully off-grid, ensuring self-sufficiency. Solar panels provide renewable energy, stored in batteries for continuous use. Water is managed through rainwater harvesting, condensation capture, and on-site storage and filtration systems, enabling efficient reuse in an arid environment. Accessibility is fully integrated for wheelchair users. Overall, the retreat merges art, living, and landscape into a resilient, autonomous structure that supports creative work while responding intelligently to climate, resources, and place.
