This villa, located on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, is designed around a clear commitment to sustainability. The architectural system combines a lightweight steel structure with thermally massive clay walls, balancing durability and passive climate control. Large north-facing openings, clerestory windows, and generous roof overhangs optimise daylight while preventing excessive summer heat gain. In summer, warm air is expelled through the clerestories via natural convection, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling. In winter, the lower-angle sun penetrates deeper through the clerestories and glazed openings, contributing to passive solar heating and thermal comfort. This integrated environmental strategy allows the house to respond dynamically to seasonal change, minimising energy consumption while enhancing occupant comfort through carefully calibrated form, materiality, and orientation, resulting in a low-energy dwelling that is responsive, efficient, and closely connected to its environment and surrounding natural systems integration.
