Community Centre

Rheine,
Germany
2026
This project begins with the existing youth centre as its foundation, retaining most external walls, key interior walls, and the basement to preserve the site’s architectural memory. The layout is simplified into an elongated rectangular form, with an additional level introduced to better organise the programme and create a clearer overall structure. The basement is retained and opened through large sliding doors, strengthening its connection to the exterior. An amphitheatre is inserted as a flexible social space for gathering, informal recreation, and basketball. A double-volume foyer establishes a clear entrance and point of orientation. Above the retained structure, a lightweight timber addition with large floor-to-ceiling windows forms the new youth centre, accommodating a climbing gym, skate park, and lounge. Between the church and the community centre, a shaded market space activates the threshold and reinforces their social relationship.
